EEA/EU and Swiss National Family Member Visa – Italy

Overview

Family members of EEA/EU and Swiss nationals can apply for a Schengen visa under this category if they are travelling with or joining their EU family member in Italy. This visa allows eligible family members to visit or stay with their relatives in Italy while benefiting from simplified documentation requirements and fee exemptions.

Eligibility

To qualify for an EEA/EU and Swiss National Family Member Visa, applicants must:

  • Hold a valid passport or travel document.
  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.
  • Be travelling with or to join their EU/EEA or Swiss family member.
  • Provide official proof of relationshipwith the family member.

Eligible Family Members:

  • Spouse(must not be legally separated or under 18).
  • Registered Civil Partner.
  • Children under 21 years of age(biological, step, or legally recognised).
  • Children over 21who are financially dependent due to health conditions.
  • Dependent parentsof the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen, if unable to support themselves due to medical conditions.

Processing Time

  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days.
  • Processing may take up to 45 daysif further documentation is required.
  • National visa applications may take up to 90 days.
  • Applications submitted in Manchester or Edinburghrequire two extra working days for transfer to London.
  • Applications cannot be expedited, as the system is automated.

Important:

  • Applications submitted less than 15 calendar days before travelwill not be accepted.
  • During busy periods (Easter, Summer, Christmas), appointment availability is limited—book early to avoid delays.

Documents Required

All documents must be presented in original with one photocopy. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Application Documents:

  • Completed visa application form (signed by the applicant).
  • Printed and signed application checklist.
  • Valid passport or travel document:
    • Must have two blank pages and be valid for at least three months beyond the return date.
  • UK Residency:
    • UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code. (Share codes for work or study purposes will not be accepted.)
  • One passport-size photograph (refer to the Photo Specifications section).

Proof of Relationship:

  • Original marriage/civil partnership certificate or birth certificate.
  • Certificates must:
    • Be dated within the last 6 months.
    • Be in English or Italian; otherwise, a certified translation is required.
    • Bear an official stamp and be issued by a UK Council authority, embassy, or consulate.
  • Copy of the EU/EEA/Swiss family member’s passport.
  • Signed declaration from the EU family member confirming the applicant is travelling with or joining them.

Joint Proof of Travel and Accommodation:

  • Proof of travel reservations:
    • Round-trip flight tickets or Eurotunnel/ferry reservations showing passenger name, dates, and travel details.
    • If travelling across multiple Schengen countries, proof of onward travel must be provided.
  • Proof of accommodation:
    • Hotel booking confirmation for the duration of the trip.
    • If staying with family or friends: Sponsorship letter with the host’s valid ID/passport (with a valid residence permit if they are a non-EU citizen).

Proof of Finance (if Applicable):

  • Recent UK bank statements covering the last three months.
  • Documents must demonstrate the applicant’s ability to cover travel expenses if not provided by the EU family member.
  • If sponsored: Official sponsorship letter with relevant supporting documents.
  1. Additional Requirements (if applicable):
  • For citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq:
    • Original birth certificate or consular declaration with full names of both parents.

Photo Specifications

Applicants must submit two recent passport-sized photographs that meet the following specifications:

  • Background: Light (white or off-white) background, ensuring clear contrast with facial features.
  • Quality: High-quality, clear, and in focus—no shadows or glare.
  • Expression: Full-face, neutral expression (no smiles). Eyes must be open and visible.
  • Accessories: No sunglasses or tinted glasses. Head coverings are only permitted for religious or cultural reasons; facial features must remain visible.
  • Dimensions: Standard passport size (35mm x 45mm).
  • Recency: Photograph must have been taken within the last six months.
  • Format: Printed on high-quality photographic paper and attached to the visa application form.
