Digital Nomad & Remote Worker Visa – Italy

Overview

The Digital Nomad & Remote Worker Visa is designed for highly qualified professionals who work remotely for a company or clients outside Italy while residing in the country. This visa allows digital professionals to live and work in Italy for an extended period under a National Visa (Type D).

Eligibility

To qualify for the Italy Digital Nomad & Remote Worker Visa, you must:

  • Be a non-EU national.
  • Have a valid UK Residency (not a UK visitor visa).
  • Hold a valid passport with at least three months validity beyond your intended stay.
  • Work remotely for a foreign company or be self-employed with clients outside Italy.
  • Meet the minimum annual income requirement (three times the minimum income threshold of €8,500).
  • Possess international health insurance covering the duration of stay in Italy.
  • Provide proof of accommodation in Italy.

UK C-visit visa holders are not eligible to apply.

Processing Time

  • Remote Worker Visa: Up to 30 days.
  • Digital Nomad Visa: Up to 120 days.

Applicants must apply at least 15 days before their travel date. Processing times cannot be expedited.

Documents Required

General Documents

Visa Application Form

    • Fully completed and signed.
    • For minors: signed by both parents/legal guardians.

Valid Passport

    • Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the visa expiry date.
    • At least two blank pages.
    • Copies of the main page and previous Schengen visas (last 3 years).

UK Residency Document

    • Valid UK Residency Permit (original & copy).
    • UK eVisa printout with valid share code

Passport-Style Photograph

    • Recent, full-frontal, white background, not older than 6 months.
    • No alterations (e.g., Photoshop edits).

Proof of Highly Qualified Profession

    • One of the following:
      • Bachelor’s Degree or post-secondary qualification (minimum 3 years).
      • Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience in the last 7 years.
      • Professional qualification requiring at least 5 years of experience.
    • If obtained outside the EU, the qualification must be legalized/apostilled and translated into Italian.

Proof of Income (Previous Fiscal Year)

    • Income must be at least three times the legal exemption threshold (€8,500 x 3).
    • Provide bank statements, tax returns, or employment contract proving income.

Proof of Accommodation in Italy

    • Rental agreement, hotel booking, or residential lease.

Health Insurance

    • Coverage for medical expenses and hospitalization for the full stay duration.

Work Experience (Minimum 6 Months)

    • Provide employment history or portfolio of previous work.

Additional Documents for Remote Workers

Employment Contract or Job Offer

    • Must state salary, which must not be lower than the average for the profession in Italy.

Employer’s Declaration

    • Notarized declaration from employer stating:
      • No criminal convictions in the last 5 years (as per Art. 22, comma 5-bis, Testo Unico).
      • Work is fully remote and not for an Italian company.
      • Copy of employer’s passport/ID.

Travel Ticket Reservation

  • Short Stay (Schengen Visa): Round-trip ticket required.
  • Long Stay (National Visa): One-way ticket required.
  • If traveling by private transport, provide:
    • Car registration document (original & copy).
    • Car insurance document (original & copy).
    • Valid driving licence (original & copy).

Special Requirements for Certain Nationalities

Applicants from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, and holders of Travel Documents (XXA/XXB codes) must provide:

  • Full names of both parents, verified by:
    • Birth certificate or
    • Consular declaration.

Important Notes

  • INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Missing documents will require rescheduling.
  • Visa issuance is not guaranteed. The consular office reserves the right to request additional documents or an interview.
  • Processing times cannot be expedited. Apply early to avoid delays.
