Mission Visa – Italy

Overview

The Mission Visa is issued to individuals traveling to Italy for official governmental, diplomatic, or public service purposes.

Eligibility

  • Government officials traveling to Italy for official duties
  • International organization employees with Headquarters Agreements in Italy
  • Delegates and diplomats invited for official conferences or meetings
  • Foreign dignitaries and religious leaders invited by the Italian government
  • Accredited journalists reporting on official events (with a Nulla Osta from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
  • Athletes and sports officials participating in events or training for over 90 days (upon request from CONI)
  • NATO civilian personnel assigned to NATO bases in Italy
  • Family members of the main applicant

General requirements

  • Must be officially invited by a relevant government authority, international organization, or recognized institution
  • Must hold a valid UK Residency Permit and a passport valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay in Italy
  • Must provide proof of employment or official status

Processing Time

  • Minimum processing time: 15 calendar days
  • Extended processing time: Up to 45 days for Schengen Visa, up to 90 days for National Visa
  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before the travel date (9 months for seafarers)
  • Applications must be submitted at least 15 days before travel

Documents Required

General requirements

  • Completed application form – Schengen Visa Form for short stays (up to 90 days) or Long Stay Visa Form for stays beyond 90 days
  • Valid passport – Must be valid for at least three months beyond the stay in Italy and have at least two blank pages
  • UK Residency Permit & Share Code – Original permit and a valid UK share code from GOV.UK
  • UK Residency: A UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.
  • Official invitation letter – Issued by the Italian government, an institution, or an international organization, stating the purpose, duration, and financial responsibility
  • Diplomatic or verbal note – Confirmation from the applicant’s home country, ministry, or employer confirming the mission purpose and financial responsibility

Additional documents based on applicant category

For government officials:

  • Official appointment letter from the applicant’s government
  • Proof of public official status (e.g., staff ID card, employer letter)

For international organization employees:

  • Employment confirmation letter from the international organization
  • Proof of Headquarters Agreement in Italy (if applicable)

For journalists:

  • Nulla Osta (official authorization) from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Media organization letter confirming accreditation

For athletes and sports officials:

  • Invitation letter from CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee)
  • Event details and participation confirmation

For NATO civilian personnel:

  • Letter from the US Department of Defence or other relevant authority (for U.S. applicants)
  • For non-U.S. applicants, an official request letter from the U.S.S.S.S.O. (U.S. diplomatic-legal office in Rome)

For family members:

  • Proof of relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificate)
  • Certificates must be multilingual or translated into English/Italian and legalized

Proof of Travel and Accommodation

  • Flight reservation – Proof of a round-trip ticket or transport booking
  • Accommodation proof – Hotel booking or an official confirmation of accommodation from the inviting organization
  • For applicants traveling by car – Ferry tickets, car registration, insurance, and driving license (plus rental agreement, if applicable)
  • For multi-Schengen trips – Confirmed travel tickets for inter-Schengen travel

For citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine – Birth certificate or consular declaration showing full names of both parents is required.

Important Notes

  • Visa applications with incomplete documents will not be accepted. If any required document is missing, the applicant must reschedule a new appointment.
  • Submission of all documents does not guarantee visa approval. The Consulate reserves the right to request additional documents or interviews.
  • Visa policies may change without prior notice. The Consulate has full authority to evaluate each application.
