Family Reunification Visa – Italy

Overview

The Family Reunification Visa allows eligible family members to join a legally residing relative in Italy. This visa is issued to dependents of Italian residents who have obtained the Nulla Osta (entry clearance) from the Italian Immigration Office (Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione – SUI).

Processing Time

  • Minimum: 15 calendar days
  • Maximum: 90 calendar days (National Visa)
  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months in advance (or 9 months for seafarers).
  • Applications submitted at the Manchester or Edinburgh centres may require an additional 2 working days for transfer to London

Documents Required

Visa Application Form

  • Completed and signed in English.

Passport-Sized Photos

  • 2 recent passport photos (not older than 6 months).
  • Specifications: 35mm x 45mm, white background, full-frontal view, mouth closed, natural expression, no retouching (e.g., Photoshop).

Valid Passport

  • Original passport with 2 blank pages.
  • Valid for at least 90 days beyond your intended departure date from Italy.
  • Photocopies of the photo page and previous Schengen visas issued in the last 3 years.
  • If visas are in an old passport, submit photocopies of the old passport’s bio page along with the relevant visas.

UK Residency

  • A UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Nulla Osta (Entry Clearance)

  • Issued by the Italian Immigration Office (SUI) and must not be older than 6 months.

Proof of Relationship

  • Marriage or Civil Partnership Certificate (original plus one photocopy).
  • Birth Certificate for children or dependent parents.

Important Notes:

  • Marriage/civil partnership certificates older than 6 months are not accepted.
  • Foreign-issued certificates must be:
    • Translated into English or Italian.
    • Legalised by the Italian Consular Office of the issuing country.
    • Multilingual certificates from Schengen countries are accepted.

Residence Status of Family Member in Italy

  • Residence card (valid for at least 1 year) or Long-Term EU Residence Permit of the family member in Italy.
  • Declaration from the family member in Italy confirming the necessity of reunification.

Parental Consent for Minors (if applicable)

  • Notarised written consent from the non-accompanying parent.
  • If the parent resides abroad, the consent must be notarised by the Italian Consulate in their country of residence.
  • Photocopy of both parents’ passports.

Proof of Travel

  • One-way travel ticket reservation showing the applicant’s name, travel dates, and route.
  • Travel by car: Provide the following:
    • Ferry/Eurotunnel tickets
    • Car registration document
    • Insurance certificate
    • Valid UK/EU driving licence
  • Multi-country trips: Submit proof of all connecting travel tickets.

Additional Requirements for Specific Nationalities

Citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, and Travel Document Holders (XXA/XXB) must provide:

  • Full names of mother and father.
  • Must be documented via a birth certificate or a Consular declaration.

Important Notes

  • Applications must be complete: Incomplete submissions will not be accepted.
  • Documents must be printed: Screenshots or photos will not be accepted.
  • Processing time may vary: Additional documents or interviews may be requested by the Consulate.
  • Visa issuance is not guaranteed: Fulfilling all requirements does not guarantee visa approval.

Special Notes for Family Members of Italian or EU Citizens

  • Family members of an Italian or EU citizen do not need the Nulla Osta.
  • Visa-exempt nationalities:
    • Can enter Italy without a visa and must register with the local Anagrafe within 3 months of arrival.
  • Visa-required nationalities:
    • Can apply for a Tourist Visa as an EU family member and must apply for a residence card within 3 months of arrival in Italy.
