Medical Care Visa – Italy

Overview

The Investor Visa is a long-stay visa (National Visa – Type D) for non-EU nationals who intend to invest or make a significant financial contribution in Italy. This visa allows investors and donors to acquire Italian residency through qualifying investments.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Medical Care Visa, applicants must demonstrate that:

  • They require medical treatment unavailable in their home country.
  • They have confirmed medical arrangements in Italy.
  • They have sufficient financial resources to cover medical costs, stay, and travel expenses.

Processing Time

  • Minimum: 15 calendar days
  • Maximum: 90 calendar days (National Visa)
  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months in advance (or 9 months for seafarers).
  • Applications submitted at the Manchester or Edinburgh centres may require an additional 2 working days for transfer to London.

Documents Required

Visa Application Form

  • Completed and signed in English.

Passport-Sized Photos

  • 2 recent passport photos (not older than 6 months).
  • Specifications: 35mm x 45mm, white background, full-frontal view, mouth closed, natural expression, no retouching (e.g., Photoshop).

Valid Passport

  • Original passport with 2 blank pages.
  • Valid for at least 90 days beyond your intended departure date from Italy.
  • Photocopies of the photo page and previous Schengen visas issued in the last 3 years.
  • If visas are in an old passport, submit photocopies of the old passport’s bio page along with the relevant visas.

UK Residency

  • A UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Medical Documentation

  • Medical records from the UK confirming the applicant’s condition and need for treatment in Italy.
  • Official medical certificate from an Italian hospital or private healthcare facility detailing:
    • Type of treatment
    • Expected duration
    • Estimated cost of medical care

Payment Confirmation for Medical Treatment

  • A certificate from the Italian medical facility confirming that the applicant has paid at least 30% of the estimated medical expenses.
  • Alternatively, government or humanitarian funding approvals may be submitted.

Proof of Finance

Applicants must provide evidence of financial resources to cover:

  • The remaining medical expenses
  • Accommodation and living costs in Italy
  • Return travel expenses

Acceptable financial proof includes:

  • Bank statements (last 3 months)
  • Sponsorship letter from a financial guarantor (if applicable)
  • Letter from employer confirming salary and approved leave for medical treatment

Proof of Accommodation in Italy

  • Hotel booking confirmation, or
  • Rental agreement, or
  • Letter from the hospital or healthcare facility providing accommodation details

Proof of Travel

  • Round-trip ticket reservation showing the applicant’s name, travel dates, and route.
  • Travel by car: Provide the following:
    • Ferry/Eurotunnel tickets
    • Car registration document
    • Insurance certificate
    • Valid UK/EU driving licence
  • Multi-country trips: Submit proof of all connecting travel tickets.

Accompanying Person’s Documents (if applicable)

If a family member or caregiver is accompanying the patient, they must provide:

  • Visa application and passport copies
  • Proof of relationship (e.g., birth/marriage certificate)
  • Medical certificate stating their assistance is necessary
  • Travel insurance covering medical emergencies (minimum €30,000)

Additional Requirements for Specific Nationalities

Citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, and Travel Document Holders (XXA/XXB) must provide:

  • Full names of mother and father.
  • Must be documented via a birth certificate or a Consular declaration.

Important Notes

  1. Applications must be complete: Incomplete submissions will not be accepted.
  2. Documents must be printed: Screenshots or photos will not be accepted.
  3. Processing time may vary: Additional documents or interviews may be requested by the Consulate.
  4. Visa issuance is not guaranteed: Fulfilling all requirements does not guarantee visa approval.
