Subordinate Work Visa – Italy

Overview

A Subordinate Work Visa (Type D) is required for non-EU nationals who intend to work in Italy under an employment contract with an Italian company. This visa allows entry into Italy for long-term employment and is subject to pre-approval by Italian authorities.

Each applicant, including children and infants, must submit their Schengen visa application in person by scheduling an online appointment.

Eligibility

To apply, you must:

  • Have a valid UK Residency (not a UK visitor visa).
  • Hold a valid passport with at least three months validity beyond your intended stay.
  • Have an Italian employer sponsorship and a valid employment contract.
  • Possess a valid Nulla Osta (Entry Clearance) issued by Italian authorities.

Applicants holding a UK C-visit visa are not eligible to apply.

Processing Time

  • The standard processing time for Schengen visas is 15-45 days.
  • For National Visas (Type D), processing can take up to 90 days.
  • It is advised to apply at least three months in advance.
  • Applications must be submitted at least 15 days before travel.

Documents Required

Visa Application Form

  • Fully completed and signed.
  • For minors: signed by both parents/legal guardians.

Passport

  • Valid for at least 3 months beyond the visa expiry date.
  • At least two blank pages.
  • Copies of the main page and previous Schengen visas (last 3 years).

UK Residency

  • A UK eVisa printoutfrom UKVI with a valid share code.

Passport-Sized Photograph

  • Recent, full-frontal, white background, no older than 6 months.
  • No alterations (e.g., Photoshop edits).

Employment Authorization – Nulla Osta

  • Official Entry Clearance (Nulla Osta) issued by the Unified Immigration Desk (SUI) in Italy.
  • The Nulla Osta must be issued within the last six months before applying.

Employment Contract

  • A legally signed Italian employment contract submitted to the Italian immigration authorities.

Proof of Accommodation

  • Rental agreement, hotel booking, or employer-provided lodging details in Italy.

Travel Ticket Reservation

  • One-way flight ticket reservation showing applicant’s name and travel date.
  • If using private transport (car/ferry), provide:
    • Car registration document (original & copy).
    • Car insurance document (original & copy).
    • Valid driving licence (original & copy).

For Seafarers Applying for a Subordinate Work Visa

Ship Registration Certificate

  • Issued by the International Naval Registry confirming ship details and purpose.

Letter from Ship Owner (Armatore)

  • Stating applicant’s employment on board, job role, and expected contract period.

Employment Contract & Work Agency Tender

  • Official contract between employer and seafarer.
  • Tender agreement legalized by the Italian Consulate.

Seaman’s Discharge Book

  • Original & photocopy.

Harbour Master’s Confirmation Letter

  • Issued by Capitaneria di Porto, stating vessel docking period in Italy.

Special Requirements for Certain Nationalities

Applicants from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, and holders of Travel Documents (XXA/XXB codes) must provide:

  • Full names of both parents, verified by:
    • Birth certificate or
    • Consular declaration.

Important Notes

  • INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. If required documents are missing, the applicant must reschedule a new appointment.
  • Visa issuance is not guaranteed. The consular office reserves the right to request additional documents or an interview.
  • Processing times cannot be expedited, and applicants are advised to apply well in advance.
