Re-entry Visa – Italy

Overview

A Re-entry Visa is issued to foreign nationals who hold a valid Italian residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) and need to return to Italy after an absence.

Eligibility

  • Foreign nationals who have lost their Permesso di Soggiorno while abroad
  • Foreign nationals whose Permesso di Soggiorno has expired while outside Italy
  • Holders of an expired residence permit who are waiting for renewal approval
  • Applicants with pending residency status requiring re-entry for documentation or processing

General requirements

  • Must have previously held a valid Italian residence permit
  • Must provide official documentation from Italian authorities regarding the loss, theft, or expiration of the permit
  • Must provide proof of intent to return to Italy for residency purposes

Processing Time

  • Minimum processing time: 15 calendar days
  • Extended processing time: Up to 45 days for Schengen Visa, up to 90 days for National Visa
  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before the travel date (9 months for seafarers)
  • Applications must be submitted at least 15 days before travel

Documents Required

General requirements

  • Completed National Visa (D) application form
  • Valid passport – Must be valid for at least three months beyond the stay in Italy and have at least two blank pages
  • UK Residency: A UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.
  • Recent passport-style photo – Must be full-frontal, white background, and not older than 6 months
  • Cover letter explaining the reason for re-entry to Italy

Additional documents based on applicant category

For applicants with a lost or stolen residence permit:

  • Police report from the country where the residence permit was lost/stolen
  • Confirmation letter from the Italian immigration office (Questura) confirming the validity of the previous residence permit

For applicants with an expired residence permit:

  • Copy of the expired Permesso di Soggiorno
  • Proof of residence permit renewal application submitted before departure

For pending residence permit applications:

  • Receipt of residence permit renewal application from Italian authorities
  • Proof of intent to continue residing in Italy (employment contract, university enrolment, etc.)

Proof of Travel

  • One-way travel ticket reservation showing intent to return to Italy
    • If traveling by plane, train, or bus, tickets must be booked directly from the operator
    • If traveling by car, ferry or Eurotunnel tickets are required along with:
      • Car registration (original & photocopy)
      • Car insurance (original & photocopy)
      • Driving license (original & photocopy)
      • Rental agreement (if applicable)
  • For multi-Schengen trips – Confirmed travel tickets for inter-Schengen travel

For citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine – Birth certificate or consular declaration showing full names of both parents is required.

Important Notes

  • Visa applications with incomplete documents will not be accepted. If any required document is missing, the applicant must reschedule a new appointment.
  • Submission of all documents does not guarantee visa approval. The Consulate reserves the right to request additional documents or interviews.
  • Visa policies may change without prior notice. The Consulate has full authority to evaluate each application.
